Brownstone Backyard
Harlem, Manhattan
Directly connected to the kitchen, the outdoor dining room and entertaining space is intimate enough for two and spacious enough to accomodate twenty guests comfortably.

A large Hackberry tree in the chuch yard adjacent to the space provides a borrowed view and a canopy layer. Smaller trees, shrubs and perennials were added to create a layered understory.
We selected tough plants that would thrive in the alkaline rubble filled soil common to many brownstone backyards in New York City.

A mini meadow of native plants and a circulating water feature attract wildlife such as cat birds and cardinals as well as a variety of pollinating bees and butterflies.
